Located in a Heritage Conservation Area in inner Sydney, the Ultimo Attic exists as an extruded timber volume that emerges from a disused attic room in a Victorian terrace house. By expanding the room and opening it to a new rooftop balcony, the space is imparted with a new sense of purpose and spatial congruence. Panels of blackbutt plywood line the walls and ceiling, providing material definition that extends to the remainder of the space: floor, balustrades, stair, door and window frames. Operable panels open on the side to allow for cross ventilation - catching summer breezes and transforming the room into a comfortable living space whilst retaining privacy.
